This prestigious award honours the memory of Professor Michael McKenzie, a valued member of the IAFDS community during his tenure at Leeds University. Tragically, Michael lost his life in a motorbike accident in 2015, a profound loss felt deeply across our network. The award, now marking its 10th anniversary, recognises the best overall student paper presented at the Symposium—celebrating academic excellence, intellectual rigour, and the scholarly spirit that Michael so passionately embodied.

Established in memory of Dr Maria Strydom, this award celebrates outstanding presentation skills by a doctoral student at each annual IAFDS. Maria, a much-loved Lecturer at Monash University, tragically passed away in 2016 during a climbing expedition on Mt Everest. As we mark the 9th year of this award, we remember Maria’s infectious enthusiasm, collegiality, and dedication to academic development—qualities that continue to inspire new generations of doctoral researchers.
This award recognises the doctoral student paper judged to have the most potential for future scholarly impact. Named in honour of Dr George Tanewski, who played a foundational role in establishing IAFDS in 2008 through Monash University, the award acknowledges emerging talent and forward-looking research. Though now retired, George remains a vibrant figure in our community, and this award continues to reflect his enduring commitment to nurturing the next generation of accounting and finance scholars.
