Each participant will benefit from a written review of their submitted paper, the opportunity to present their work to leading international professors, a detailed one-on-one discussion with an experienced academic, and an excellent networking experience with fellow doctoral students from around the world.
At the end of the Symposium, certificates will be awarded for the following categories: the Michael McKenzie Best Paper, the Maria Strydom Best Presenter, the George Tanewski Paper with Most Potential, Best Pitch, and Best Discussant.
Additionally, all students will receive a Certificate of Participation for attending IAFDS 18.
We seek original empirical and theoretical papers in accounting and finance (including banking), with a particular emphasis on research that addresses significant and impactful problems within these disciplines.

“The experience of participating in IAFDS as a PhD student was invaluable and contributed decisively to my development as a researcher. The one-to-one sessions provided me with the opportunity to receive extensive feedback from experienced researchers. The feedback, in the form of detailed referee reports, was instrumental in preparing my papers for successful journal submissions. Beyond research itself, the collegial and friendly atmosphere that permeates the meetings is amazing. By attending the symposium, I also expanded my network, and equally importantly, made great friends in the process. I was delighted (and honored) to return to the IAFDS community later as an academic, sharing my experiences with new cohorts of brilliant PhD students, and catching up with friends. For the invaluable impact IAFDS has had in my professional and personal development, I strongly recommend the program to PhD students seeking careers in academia.” Dr Tiago Loncan
“I am a currently a full professor of finance at the University of Vaasa in Finland. I first attended the IAFDS in 2013, which was hosted by University of Bologna, Italy, as a final year PhD student, where I was fortunate to win the best paper award. From studying at Bangor University as a PhD student, I have held academic posts at the universities of Leeds, Kent, and, now, Vaasa – throughout this time I have been a regular attendee and contributor to IAFDS and have introduced the event to the University of Kent and the University of Vaasa; the people I have met through the IAFDS network have been influential in my career long-term collaborators, friends and informal mentors. I believe the IAFDS community have played important roles in my career path as well as my publication successes including in journals such as the Journal of Corporate Finance. I look forward to many more years being a part of the IAFDS community!” Professor Timothy King
“The International Accounting & Finance Doctoral Symposium (IAFDS) afforded me an excellent opportunity to present my work to a global audience of professors and researchers outside my local university. I was impressed by the number of prominent academics in Accounting and Finance attending the Symposium, and the detailed feedback they provided on my research. This feedback helped, not only to improve the quality the paper I presented, but also the overall quality of my PhD thesis. It was also great to meet PhD students from all over the World. I strongly recommend that PhD students in Accounting and Finance take this opportunity to present their work and to develop an international network of contacts for the future.” - Alan Duboisee De Ricquebourg, (curretly Associate Professor in Accounting Leeds), 2012 Glasgow
“Student discussant part is a great idea! Especially for comparison with faculty discussion. This is really a well balanced symposium. I will definitely attend next year.” - 2017 Trondheim
“The best conference I have attended so far. Truly appreciate the time invested by the faculty discussant to review my paper in such great length.”- 2021 Online
“The strengths of the conference stand in the really insightful comments from the discussants and professors, as well as in the chance of networking with both students and experts” – 2022 Athens
“The friendly environment really helps to develop the network and to present more efficiently.” – 2022 Athens
“A fantastic conference, especially in terms of 1:1 session that I received a lot of valuable insightful comments from the discussant for improving my paper. I really enjoy this conference.” – 2022 Athens
“Social activities helped a lot with networking.” – 2023 Paris
